Excerpt from: The Sophisticate
Journal of the Art Deco Society of California
Summer 1986 issue
The Lorenzo Theatre, in San Lorenzo, received an ART DECO PRESERVATION AWARD from the ART DECO SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA IN May, 1986.
The ASDC's Preservation Awards are given annually, to individuals or organizations working to preserve the Art Deco style in architecture and other fields, and to buildings of significant merit in the Art Deco or Streamline Modern styles. Award-winning buildings are honored either in recognition of their restoration / preservation, or in support of efforts to save and preserve them.
The eight winners of the 1986 Art Deco Preservation Awards were all outstanding government or commercial buildings. The 1986 awards went to:
- The Alameda County Courthouse, Oakland
- The Elite Café, San Francisco
- The Lorenzo Theatre, San Lorenzo
- The Merchandise Mart, San Francisco
- The National Maritime Museum, San Francisco
- The Nevada County Courthouse, Nevada City
- The Stern Building, San Francisco
- The Wiltern Theatre and Office Building, Los Angeles
The award citation stated that an award went to "the endangered Lorenzo Theatre" in San Lorenzo. This theatre is currently not in use, and the [ASDC's] Preservation Committee is supporting a local group in its attempts to save the building.
